WANTED: HOLEY SOCKS

We must root out all the holey socks from the city of Dublin. No chest of drawers must be left unturned.

In these sparse times holey socks are valuable commodities forecast to experience steady economic growth in the next quarter. Invest in sock futures. Watch the value of your socks rise. The more they are darned, the more they are valued. That’s the power of bodkin economics. Find out more here: http://futuremenders.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/wanted-holey-socks/

The Crafts Council of Ireland is delighted to present Futuremenders at ABSOLUT Fringe 2011 as part of Year of Craft 2011.

WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

INCREDIBLY, NO WORLD RECORDS HAVE EVER BEEN SET FOR DARNING.

LET’S SET SOME RECORDS AT THE DUBLIN SOCK EXCHANGE!!!

First record: WORLD RECORD FOR MASS DARNING

Description: Number of people darning simultaneously

Rules: Every person must be actually having a go at darning, no posers!

Official registration: We’ll start with a trial run, then once we have authorisation from Guinness World Records we can go for the official title.

Video challenge: All record attempts will be videoed and, where possible, submitted to the GWR challenge website, where darners worldwide are encouraged to try and beat our record. Hey, we’ll all be the winners if we get millions of folks darning online.

How’ll it work?: Whenever there’s a peak of activity at the Sock Exchange at Filmbase over the four days of its run, an announcement will be made that a world record attempt is about to take place. A short video will be made showing each darners handiwork in close-up with an accompanying voiceover numbering “Darner Number One, Darner Number Two etc”.

WATCH OUT FOR FLASHMOB WORLD RECORD ATTEMPTS ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER!!!

Here’s the text submitted to the Guinness World Record team to have our attempt authorised:

Members of the public will be invited to darn a sock as part of a mass darning event at The Sock Exchange at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2011. No payment is involved. Those who don’t know how to darn will follow simple instructions on posters. All participants will be given (or provide their own) sock, a darning egg (an old lightbulb), yarn and a needle.

The attempt will be videoed in such a way that each darner can be seen and counted. The footage will show each darner in close-up and their completed darned socks to prove that they were all actually darning and not pretending. Although the idea is to darn socks, any darnable item is acceptable. The darning must be by hand.

The definition of darning is taken as a sewing technique for repairing holes or worn areas in fabric or knitting using needle and thread alone. It employs darning stitch, a simple running stitch in which the thread is “woven” in rows along the grain of the fabric, with the stitcher reversing direction at the end of each row, and then filling in the framework thus created, as if weaving. Other, more intricate darning stitches are acceptable.

The quality of the darning will not be judged. A completed darn must have running stitch going in at least two directions and covering the hole such that the sock could reasonably be worn again without the foot being seen.

I am setting up this record attempt to promote darning, because there are no world records for darning and because its quirky and fun for all involved. I, the organiser, am an artist who wants to learn to darn. The idea behind the Sock Exchange is that darned socks gain in value.

The initial event takes place 22-25 September 2011 in Dublin where we will set an unofficial record. More events will take place in international venues where hopefully the official record can be set.

Thank you for considering this record attempt.

Sock Exchange seeks economic analyst

Darning is just a front. The Sock Exchange is all about economics. Socks are our assets and we try and maximise their value.

The Sock Exchange is looking for an economic correspondent or financial advisor to pontificate on the rise and fall of sock futures, woolly derivatives and sock securities.

sock wears out – value plummets

sock gets darned – value soars

Any financial expert who can expand on this basic economic principal please contact info at jonnetmiddleton.com with a degree of urgency.

Help us shed light on bodkin economics today!
