Carve a Wooden Butter Knife

This workshop is an introduction to the art of whittling in which you will learn basic knife grips (skills) and techniques for carving wood.

You will learn all the skills you need to whittle a knife from a block of wood and come away with your very own hand-carved knife. Participants will be taught the safe way to work with a very sharp knife and wood - no wood-working experience is necessary although participants should be reasonably comfortable with using sharp tools. All raw materials and tools are provided.

Your tutor Ed Forristal of Forristal Woodwork discovered a love of woodworking in 2010 during a trip to Japan. Somewhere in the mountains of the Kyoto Prefecture, he found himself cutting down trees to build his host a garage. Upon returning to Ireland he decided to continue his learning and pursue woodwork full time. Ed’s philosophy is to build quality, long-lasting pieces with a unique aesthetic, he is inspired by a love of traditional joinery. Ed has most recently exhibited his work in the Grennan Mill Craft School show as part of Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Workshop will take place on Monday 29th October.
