National Ceramics Month - Exhibition at Kilkenny Shop Dublin
IRELAND’S €100 million ceramics industry is to be celebrated in June with the launch by the Crafts Council of Ireland of National Ceramics Month
As part of this month-long celebration of Irish ceramics, the Crafts Council of Ireland is planning several exciting and high profile events.
The Crafts Council of Ireland is encouraging Irish people and our almost 4 million summer visitors to take the time to experience the beautiful work of Ireland’s talented ceramacists and to recognise the cultural and economic contribution of more that 1,000 ceramic artisans and designers all over Ireland.
• EXHIBITION AT KILKENNY SHOP DUBLIN: The iconic shop window of Kilkenny Shop on Nassau Street in Dublin will feature a striking exhibition of work designed and made by 10 leading ceramicists, including a 12 foot photographic portrait of the artisans: Isobel Egan, Adam Frew, Sinead Lough, Andrew Ludick, Lucy Meagher, Nicholas Mosse, Louis Mulcahy, Mary Neeson, Colm de Rís & Grainne Watts. This elite group was selected for their wonderful and orignal ideas and the exciting designs range from beautiful everyday functional-ware to exquisite sculptural decorative objects.
• IRISH CRAFT GARDEN AT BLOOM: Ceramics will form the centrepiece of ‘The Irish Craft Garden’ at Bloom, Ireland's largest garden, food and craft festival, at the Phoenix Park, Dublin from Thursday 2 to Monday 6 June 2011. Adults and children alike will be invited to try their hand at making their own ceramic creations and placing them in an exciting, ever-growing garden of Irish craft!
• EXHIBITIONS AT FARMLEIGH: Two significant exhibitions of Irish ceramic design take place in June: Irish Craft Portfolio features the work of Ireland’s international stars of ceramics and craft, and Ceramics Ireland’s exhibition transFORM features the best of contemporary ceramic practice from makers at home and abroad. Both exhibitions take place at Farmleigh Gallery, Phoenix Park from 30 May to 24 July 2011. A visit to the exhibitions, which were opened by Richard Bruton, TD, Miniser for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, has been included on the itinerary of delegates attending the World Crafts Council - Europe General Assembly on 8 June.
• EDMUND DE WAAL LECTURE: Celebrated International Ceramcist Edmund de Waal makes his first appearance in Ireland since his best selling book ‘The Hare with Amber Eyes’ was published, with a public reading and interview in City Hall, Dublin on Wednesday 8th June at 6.30pm.
• STUDIO VISITS: Ceramic studios all over Ireland will be open to welcome visitors to see ceramics being made and in some cases to invite trial and participation. Meet the makers in their own studio and experience the craft of ceramics first-hand!
